A brief LoRaWAN overview

LoRaWAN is a low power, long range, secure and highly scalable wireless IoT technology. It boasts open line of sight range measured in miles. Realistic range within the built environment will depend on building fabric/environment conditions but typically you should easily achieve ~100m or more through floors/walls etc.

What makes LoRaWAN unique is its server-based model. There are 3 components to a LoRaWAN network: Sensors, Gateways and a Server.

The key to understanding the scalability of this model is that no sensor has a 1:1 relationship to any single Gateway. Rather a singular LoRaWAN server will exist on a network and multiple Gateways will feed into it via said TCP/IP network. Sensors in the field are registered on the SERVER and providing that they are within wireless range of at least one Gateway, data will be received at the server from the sensor and be available for integration into whichever system it is needed in (BMS/EMS etc).

This model allows for complete and total wireless coverage of any site via the use of as many gateways as needed.

However, you may realise that you don’t have a server in this kit. But that’s where you’ll be wrong. Gateways such as the included Milesight UG65 have the option to run an onboard LoRaWAN server, with the LoRa gateway component of the device feeding directly into it. Sensors such as those included in the kit are registered on the built in LoRaWAN server, with integration options already enabled such MQTT, API’s or in this case a BACnet/IP object server.

Gateway’s like this with a built in LoRAWAN server are ideal for small deployments where only 1 or 2 gateways may be required for coverage, and the requirement/complexity of a dedicated server is not deemed necessary.
